Dancing. Magic. Sisters. Moments.

You know those moments in life where time seems to stop and the universe aligns and for that brief moment, everything is right?

My sister and I have shared that exact same moment—about seven years apart. By now, I’m sure you all know how much dancing was a part of my life before I found writing. And my sister and I talk all the time how much it hurts to leave the world and try to live a “normal” life.

But this moment that I’m talking about happened when I was fifteen years old. The Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty is the title (and coveted) role in that production. I was cast as this part, and years later my sister would play the same role. And we both had this magical experience—when standing on stage at the finale, we knew it would be the greatest role we’d ever play—and somehow we knew we’d never have a moment like it again.

I don’t know why certain moments imprint themselves in our memories. Why some moments seem to slow down—so much so that you can feel the energy of it imbedded in your skin. Where it catches your breath and you have to pause—because there’s something different in the air—something that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

So last night, my sister and I got to go see Sleeping Beauty. Sitting next to each other in the audience, we sighed and cried in the same moments, both remembering the choreography to a tee. It was so fun! But then… we shared a moment that transported us back to the original night we performed.

At the end of the performance, we were called up on stage to be recognized as previous Lilac Fairies. And standing there, center stage, was a gift. Because it was a moment in life where we could look back and appreciate the life we had been given—the gift of being able to dance and have those moments in life to look back on, and smile.

So in a way, spending last night with my sister was healing. Although it was bitter/sweet, and it still hurts to miss what was, we still get to look ahead and have those magical memories to be our companion as we travel forward.

Red. Head. Out.

  1. I noticed the new design right away! Very professional.
Glad you shared that moment with your sister. Amazing you both had the same role back in school.
While I can think back to certain moments that were like what you described, I also know that there are new moments coming and in different areas. I've seen those with my books. (Still waiting on the guitar moment. Hope that is soon!)
The best is yet to come in life - believe!

  6. I noticed the blog design almost instantly! I've been having a lot of those looking back moments lately (moving back to my home town and all). It's so awesome that they recognized you that way. I suspect, you'll have more of those amazing moments.

  7. I miss playing viola professionally. I hardly even get to *go* to the symphony, let alone play anymore, but I loved the magic it created. Sigh.

And hey, you got a new site design? I didn't notice! ;) Thanks for the shout out!

  9. Hey Morgan,

Yes, thank goodness, your bestest fan has arrived. I immediately noticed your new look, as in the new look of your blog. Very nifty neato, I must say :)

It's heart warming to see you there with your sister. Two of the most adorable Lilac Fairies my lil' ol' eyes have ever seen.

Now you have another wondrous moment etched in both your hearts. We all move forward and embrace the positive possibilities :)

Have a magical weekend, you who now lets her words do some dancing.

    Gary :)

  16. Morgan, what a beautiful moment for you and your sister. I love those moments with my kids, when we're laughing about something silly and I realize that these are the moments we live for. Not the books or the words or anything like that, but for the moments with my sons that take my breath away. They're growing up way too soon...my oldest just turned 17 and he's scouting out universities. It all goes way too fast. Best to enjoy each moment.

  18. Hey, Morg,

YOUR BLOG LOOKS AWESOME! SO impressive!

Now, just thing how amazing it will be when your DAUGHTER dances in the role of the Lilac Fairy ... I hope you bring a few boxes of tissues... It will happen for sure. I just know it!

I have to smile a bit every time you get like this... you are all of, soon to be, 33 and you act like such an OLD LADY sometimes. You, my sweet, are in the BEST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE! Your thirties pave the way to the mature adult you will become when you hit your forties and fifties. ENJOY your youth! Be daring, have FUN!

Yes, life has dealt you many responsibilities for such a your person BUT you can still act like the INSANE redhead I know you are...

The magic is apart of who you are and it will never leave it. I'm thinking about a wonderful line in one of my favorite sixties movies. In Valley of the Dolls, Susan Hayward aka Helen Lawson delivers THE PERFECT LINE when she talks about Patty Duke's Character Neely O'hara. "There is nothing that will destroy her talent (in your case magic), but she will destroy herself."

E'hem... Michael DiGesu quote... "You will always have your magic as long as you BELIEVE in it, because nothing will take it away except for you."

    Remember that.

  19. I can look back on great moments in my life, but like Alex I agree that there are still greater moments to come. Like now I get to coach sports instead of playing them very much, which is surprisingly rewarding.

    And your site looks great!

  20. Hey you:)

NICE job to you (and Tiana) on the new look (I see someone has been busy post-Twitter #haha :)

And how awesome that you and the Sister got the chance to enjoy and be recognized *together* on stage... that is a life-memory, for sure :)

(Me and my brother might one day be called up to be recognized together, but probably only because the judge wants to see us before he fines us for doing something Koopmansdumb. (That's Dutch, by the way.. and yes, not only am I a SIGGY and a Lord, I am biannual too:)

Hope the writing is coming along... I am sucking wind, and so need to get focused... so if you ever want to get annoying emails every Friday, just let me know :)

Cheers and fare thee well :)

  21. Morgan, this was a touching story. It's hard to leave behind something we love to begin a different grand adventure. We don't know if we will love it as much. Love it differently. Frankly, the whole thing is a bit of a mystery. I suspect that you will have many other moments that you *know* are special while you are standing in them. And you might have flashes of other special moments during that experience. Of course, that one will always be extra special because you shared it with your sister. But, as Michael said in his comment... It's all just beginning for you. Taste the bitter/sweet and then smile and move on. Something incredible is waiting just beyond that turn in the road.

  22. What a wonderful story, Morgan. I'm sure you both felt blessed in that moment. It can be difficult to know a certain part of your life is over, but then we remember how much we have where we're at now. Wishing you and your sister the best! Writer’s Mark

  25. Your blog looks lovely, just so I can add my two cents to everyone else's. :)

Those moments in time truly are extraordinary to everyone who has the chance to live them. Those moments that are marked by so many emotions, and by your own personal perception of what they mean to you. It's great that you and your sister have something so powerful to connect you on such a deep and personal level. Not a lot of people have such an opportunity.

  30. Something's new around here. Did you get glasses? Oh, right, the design. Yes, I noticed that right away, and it looks great! Very professional. Should I be wearing a suit and tie right now? I guess this adult onesie will have to do (You're welcome for the mental picture).

Oh, and what a beautiful moment you guys shared. One of us has a sister, and she's a raging rhymes with witch who constantly makes her parents cry by treating them like complete crap (like actually taking them to court over false allegations). So in a way, just be happy you have a sister you can connect with, period.

Ah, those perfect moments, the ones we live for... Is there anything so magic as being on the stage? It's been forever and I miss it sometimes. Seems like that was a lifetime ago.

  39. Very cool new design and what a wonderful memory for you and your sister to share.

I'd love to have shared that with my brother but I can't dance and he looks silly in a tu tu.

  40. I like your new design. It's very simple and clean, without too much going on, and very easy to navigate.

That's a lovely story about you and your sister. I used to be a dancer too, once in upper elementary school and again my senior year of university, but nowhere near on the level you were. Sometimes I wonder what it would've been like if I'd continued dance lessons and danced in more than just one show.

  41. Being transported all the way back and to recollect about being recognized as previous Lilac Fairies must be a real good experience..

  42. Wow, Morg. Chills. What a blessing to be able to enjoy such a role both as a performer and as a spectator, to see the beauty and get to relive such a bedazzling time in your lives. And to share it with your sister! I know some of my favorite memories come from being able to play Camille Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals in orchestra with my sister (who plays the flute like a champ). I wish I could've seen you in action!! And I want to see the Sleeping Beauty ballet now!! (LOVE the music from it.)

  43. Love the new blog design. And this post, dang, totally has left me with tears in my eyes. I love that you got to experience such moments with your sister, and just in general. I can totally understand the bittersweet aspect, but also the magic in it :)

  44. I know exactly what you mean. Mine is this moment in complete darkness when I woke up and found my publishing deal waiting in my inbox.

I'll always cherish that moment, even if things went horribly pear-shaped after that.

  45. How cool that you and your sister had the same magical moment! That is so special and what a great connection. :)
